Good garden watering techniques

By following a few simple guidelines, watering will be more efficient and your water will not be wasted.

  • First, select the plants that need to be watered the most, rather than randomly watering the entire garden or flower bed.
  • The best time to water is in the morning, between 5:00 am and 7:00 am. The vegetables will take up water before the soil is heated and the leaves are dry. Late afternoon, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., is also suitable in hot weather.
  • Plants like to be watered with standing water that is at the air temperature, i.e. preferably rainwater or water from a natural reservoir. Watering with cold water is harmful to plants, due to large temperature differences it weakens them and may even cause the death of the roots.
  • Try to water the soil instead of the leaves. Thanks to this, the water will go to the roots where it is most desired.
  • Vegetables should be watered slowly with plenty of water, which will encourage the plant to develop a deep root system and be able to draw water from the depths of the earth.
What should be avoided?
  • Vegetables should not be watered during the hottest heat, between 10:00 and 18:00. Plants can get burned and the water will evaporate quickly.
  • It should not be watered frequently and with a small amount of water. Water from slightly moistened soil will evaporate quickly and this will encourage the plant to rooting shallow.
  • It should not be watered late as the leaves may freeze and it is easier then for fungal diseases and nocturnal snail invasion.
Tips for concrete vegetable gardens
  • It is worth thinking about the drip line inside the vegetable garden. This is an advantageous solution because we can obtain better cultivation results and save time and amount of water.
  • The top layer of soil in the vegetable garden should be slightly tampered with, so that the water can reach the soil more easily.
  • A layer of mulch can be added around the plants to keep the soil moist. A 2/3 cm layer of straw laid in early spring is enough. Straw mulch reduces soil temperature and prevents weeds from emerging. There will be less watering and less needling.
  • Before sowing vegetables, it is worth mixing the soil with e.g. basalt flour, perlite or hydrogel. These substances retain water in the soil for a longer time.
